Every society faces the problems of looking after the welfare of the sick, the weak, the destitute and the needy. One way of assessing the status of a society is the value accorded to an individual and his basic human needs. These have not always received the attention they deserve in the planning of economics, particularly in developing countries. Most of the available resources are consumed by other pressing needs of the country.
Sometimes it happens that a fortunate combination of the national situation and personal characteristics produce an individual with a capacity to understand the seemingly impossible challenge of looking after the needy and develop appropriate responses to said challenge. Such an individual in the case of Pakistan is Abdul Sattar Edhi, the founder of the Edhi Foundation.
Abdul Sattar Edhi is a selfless individual who has devoted his entire life to help the sick, needy and the poor. To this day the Edhi Foundation has helped countless people and has served in philanthropic missions all over the Muslim world. Abdul Sattar Edhi is highly respected and loved by the people of Pakistan. In fact, his respect and reverence is almost as much as that commanded by M. A. Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.
Above all else, there are three qualities of Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi which define him and are the fundamental pillars of the respect he commands worldwide.
The founder of the Edhi Foundation is a very selfless man. He spent his entire life looking after the needy and the poor without regard for himself. Right from the start when he had a battered van which served as an ambulance in which he hurtled from place to place helping others to creating one of the largest organizations of Pakistan, Edhi has done everything in his power to help others and be a source of comfort for others.
Despite being the head of the Edhi Foundation, Abdul Sattar Edhi has led a very simple and humble life. To this day, he owns two pairs of clothes, has never taken a salary from his organization and lives in a small two bedroom apartment over his clinic in Karachi.
Honesty is the greatest quality of Edhi. Even after incalculable sums of money have passed through his hands he has never had the slightest notion of greed. He is a simple man and prefers his simple lifestyle in contrast to the luxurious lifestyle of others. Due to this the Edhi Foundation has become such a big success.
Conclusively, Edhi is a man of many qualities. His contributions to society are great and it seems he is just not appreciated enough in accordance to the services he has rendered to mankind.
